~Sum 41's 'The Hell Song' Not As Frivolous As Video Indicates~
- Sum 41's video for "The Hell Song" has a fun concept--kids staging a concert with a band made up of dolls. However, singer Deryck Whibley said that the song is a lot more serious than the video conveys--it's about a friend who contracted AIDS
"'The Hell Song' is the most serious--not the most serious but the most personal song for all of us, I think," Whibley said. "Just because it's about one of our best friends, this girl that we grew up with all our lives, about a year and a half ago contracted HIV. And it's not like an HIV or AIDS awareness song, it's just about realizing how quick your life can change and how vulnerable we really all are."
Guitarist Dave Baksh added, "I mean, when you're in your twenties, you're just like, 'Party all the time! Yeah dudes, I'm just going to go get hit by that car, all right?' But this just added a sense of, 'Well maybe we aren't immortal.'"
Sum 41 is flying to Germany for a few dates next week before starting a college tour later this month. "The Hell Song" is currently Number 32 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart in its second week of release.
